WINDERMERE HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETICS

Athletes Responsibilities

All players must be on time for all practices and team meetings. If you are inexcusably late, you will sit and watch practice. Anyone missing practice will hurt the team. An unexcused missed practice will suspend a player for one game. The second unexcused missed practice will subject the player to suspension for an undetermined amount of games pending a conference with parents. We will be dressed, ready for practice to begin on time. Conferences with teachers, make-up tests, doctor appointments, and other conflicts should be at a time that will not conflict with practice. As a player, you have a commitment to your team; the team suffers without your participation.

On game days, the team will report to a designated area, by a specific time, dressed down and prepared for the pre- game meeting. On practice days, the team will dress down and immediately turn to the practice floor ready for the day’s practice.

The use of alcoholic beverages, tobacco, or the use of unprescribed or dangerous drugs will not be tolerated. This will result in suspension or dismissal from the team and school.

During practice and games, profanity and/or derogatory comments towards teammates will not be tolerated. If this occurs in practice you will be warned. If this doesn’t rectify the situation, the player will be asked to leave practice with a possible suspension from the next game. If this behavior is displayed during a game, the player will be removed from the game. You cannot lay and be productive if you not poise.

On away game days, the behavior on the bus going to and coming from an opponent’ school will be appropriate for the safety of all concerned. You will prepare yourself for the game by either quiet talk with a friend or thinking of your role in the up coming game. Pre-game preparation is very important to the success of the game. We want to be mentally ready to perform once we enter the game area.

Any player on suspension will be required to attend and participate in practices. During games, the suspended athlete will sit on the bench in street clothes. Despite the discipline measures, the athlete is still a member of the team.

All players will ride to and return from games on the team bus. We win and lose as a team. Some of the strongest team bonds are built as a team gathers to share a victory and lament defeat. *Note there may be some extreme exceptions to this rule. Any change must be clearly discussed with the parent(s) and the coach.

It is very important that you and your parents/guardian have read the preceding expectations. You may not agree with these guidelines, but we feel they are vital ingredients to a successful season. We do not anticipate any problems with anybody not meeting these standards, but as your coach, I need to be honest with you in terms of how infractions will be handled. Please sign below along with your parent/guardian’s signature indicating that you and your parent/guardian have read and understand these expectations.

COMPETITIVE SPORTS

Softball

WHS begins its softball season as soon as school begins in September and continues until mid October. If there are sufficient members of players, we form a Junior Girls, Junior Boys, Senior Girls and Senior Boys teams. A student is considered a junior if he/she is 15 years of age during the calendar year of the softball season. Weather permitting, we compete against the other high on the island.

Basketball

WHS begins its basketball season after softball season and it continues till the end of February. If there are sufficient members of players, we form a Junior Girls, Junior Boys, Senior Girls and Senior Boys teams. A student is considered he/she is 15 years of age during the calendar year of the basketball season.

The island’s high schools have two divisions: the North and South due to travel distances, comprising of three team each. Prior to the Bahamas’ Hugh Campbell Basketball Classic, where 32 invited teams compete for the nations title, there is an Eleuthera Playoff, where the first and second place teams from each division compete for the Eleuthera Championship. WHS attempts to play the high school teams from the North at home and away in non-league competition. To give athletes greater exposure and practice, adult teams from Eleuthera Amateur Basketball Association (EABA) are invited to compete with our senior girls and boys teams.

Although our school population is small, the WHS senior boys teams are often ranked from 10th to 16th during the Hugh Campbell Tournament.

Track & Field

The WHS track & field season usually begins in late November with general conditioning. Further training continues through February. Students who practice, and compete against Central Eleuthera High in a sub-district meet, have the opportunity to travel to Exuma for an invitational meet featuring numerous family-island and Nassau schools, and then compete in an All-Eleuthera meet. Those who qualify in these meets are then allowed to continue competition in the Bahamas National Track & field meet in Nassau.

Students must be diligent to practice on their own and along side the coach to become competitive athletes.

Volleyball

The WHS volleyball season is one of the shortest seasons. Since volleyball has not become a dominant sport on Eleuthera, our season lasts about one month, where students practice to make the team in preparation for the All-Eleuthera High School and Junior High school round robin tournament, held abut the third week of April.

 Soccer

Soccer is only beginning to be noticed by the schools on Eleuthera. WHS began its first Junior Boys soccer team in 2002. We look forward to seeing the sport expand to the Junior and Senior Boys and Girls levels in the coming years.
